ANZAC DAY EVENTS
From our sub-Branch Secretary
This Sunday, the 19th there will be the ANZAC Sunday Service at the Waverley Park War Memorial, commencing about 11.15 am. This is a very important Service as we will be not only holding the usual ANZAC Sunday service, but re-dedicating the renovations to the War Memorial and the re-gilding in gold of all the names on the Memorial. Also the Waverley Council will be announcing the winners of the School Competition. There will be a bus departing the Club about 10.30am or so for the Park otherwise the 380, 381 and 382 buses pass the park regularly.
We will also be honored by the attendance of the National President of the Returned and Services League of Australia, Rear Admiral Ken Doolan, OA, (Rtd). We have received apologies from Rod White the newly elected RSL State President and Senator Ronaldson who was instrumental in assisting with a grant of $25,000 towards the renovations, and who has sent a message of congratulations which will be read by our Member for Wentworth, Malcolm Turnbull MHR. After the Service there will be a Reception of sorts back in the Auditorium of our Club for those and only those who attend the Service.
Then on Saturday 25th April, the Club will open at 6.30am prior to the departure of the march to the Waverley Park War Memorial where the ANZAC Day Commemoration Service will take place. This is a most important day in the history of the RSL and Australia, being 100 years since our soldiers and New Zealand soldiers landed on the beaches of Gallipoli. All members are invited to march, for those unable to march a bus, graciously provided by the War Memorial Hospital, will take them to the Park for the Service and return them to the Club.
Those wonderful ladies of our Women’s Auxiliary will once again work very hard all day Friday then on Saturday to provide our breakfast and lunch for those returning to the Club after the Service or from the City or other Services. Please assist them where possible.
Finally on Sunday 26thApril the Waverley Council in conjunction with the District RSL Clubs and sub-Branches will be hosting a film evening at the Tamarama Beach for those interested. Further information concerning this event is on the internet and is being promulgated by the Club. A bus is available departing from the Club between 3.30 and 4.30pm to the Beach provided there are sufficient interested to use it. Please leave your names at reception if you wish to use the bus and attend the films.
We are looking forward to and hoping for a large turnout on each occasion and more particularly for the ANZAC Day March departing from the Club at 7.30am on the 25th April and Service at the Park. School children are invited to march with us with their parents at the rear of the main body.
Looking forward to seeing you at both events,
Bill Harrigan – sub-Branch Secretary.
